As well as being the first American commercial computer, the UNIVAC I was the first American computer designed at the outset for business and administrative use. The UNIVAC handled both numbers and alphabetic characters equally well. In 1952, the UNIVAC successfully predicted the outcome of the 1952 presidential election during a televised news broadcast.
